Let’s get to know GSPE’s Hot Aisle Containment (HAC)

In today’s data centerswhere rack density continues to increase and high efficiency is essential one common “silent cost” is uncontrolled airflow. When hot exhaust air from the rear of the racks mixes back into the cold air stream, the cooling system has to work harder, server inlet temperatures become unstable, and energy consumption increases.

Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) is a solution that is simple in concept yet delivers a significant impact: it isolates the hot airflow path (hot aisle) to prevent server exhaust air from recirculating and “interfering” with the cold airflow path.

HAC is designed as an enclosure that surrounds the hot aisle corridor, with hot air returned through the top (top return). This results in a more controlled airflow pattern, more stable cooling performance, and improved operational efficiency.

Why Is Hot Aisle Containment Important?

Improved cooling efficiency AC/CRAC systems do not have to “work extra” because hot exhaust air is properly captured and managed.

Supports higher rack densityIdeal for modern data centers with increasing IT loads and higher power density per rack.

Enhanced control and monitoringEasier to monitor hot aisle conditions and ensure the containment system performs as intended.

1) Top Partition

The upper section of the containment functions as the hot air return pathway. With a top-return configuration, hot exhaust air from the servers is directed back to the return path without recirculating into the cold aisle, significantly reducing the risk of short-circuit airflow.

2) Containment Frame

The primary structure of the HAC uses a combination of materials that are robust and visually clean:

  • 6 mm Polycarbonate Panels: transparent, impact-resistant, and enable easy visual inspection.

  • 40×40 mm Aluminum Extrusion Frame: strong, precise, modular, and easy to expand or modify.

This design makes the HAC not only functional, but also professional in appearance for data center environments.

3) Overhead Cable Tray

Effective cable management is essential for healthy airflow. The overhead cable tray keeps cabling organized and away from critical airflow zones—reducing airflow obstruction caused by cable congestion and simplifying maintenance as well as network/power expansion.

4) Server Rack

The racks are the primary source of hot exhaust air captured by the containment. With HAC, hot air from the rear side of the racks is controlled more effectively. For maximum performance, the use of blanking panels and grommets also helps minimize airflow bypass.

5) Automatic Sliding Door

Access to the HAC corridor is made more modern and efficient with an automatic sliding door. Compared to swing doors, this system reduces hot air leakage during access events. It can be integrated with proximity sensors, push buttons, or access control systems, helping maintain airflow stability during operation.

6) Monitoring System

A monitoring system is installed as a display panel on the outside of the containment to provide the operations team with quick visibility of hot aisle conditions. With monitoring in place, you gain better control to ensure the containment operates as designed and conditions remain stable.

7) Cover Door

The cover door utilizes:

  • SPCC 1.5 mm: a clean and rigid panel material

  • Black Sandy Powder Coating: an elegant industrial finish with strong wear and corrosion resistance

  • C3 Standard Grade: corrosion protection suitable for indoor industrial environments, ideal for data center/technical rooms
